Scale For Threatened Languages – 6月 25th, 2010

In the early 1990s, Fishman developed the Graded Intergenerational Disruption Scale for Threatened Languages (GIDS), which depicts different stages of societal bilingualism from the perspective of the minority language and also serves as a guideline for reversing language shift. Fishman’s GIDS is meant to support bilingualism and cultural pluralism and is based on the idea that culture and language are closely intertwined. It is important to note that Stage Eight is the worse-case scenario for a minority language, and Stage One is the best-case scenario, representing cultural and linguistic pluralism.
